Hugh Davies

Hugh Davies
The late Hugh Davies was born in the little village of St Ishmaels, Pembrokeshire, son of the local Baptist minister.  This portrait of him was done by his friend Colin Jones of Nantgarw.

Hugh loved tinkering with cars, and by the time that he joined the army he was a good mechanic. He served in North Africa and Italy, maintaining army lorries, and cannibalizing the bits left after bombing strikes. He was made up from 3rd class to 1st class mechanic near the end of his service.

After the war Hugh Davies went to the Barry College to study art where he met his wife Nest.  He began teaching in King Henry VIII Grammar School in Abergavenny in 1948.

He was a man passionate about art and about his native Pembrokeshire which features in many of his paintings, as does the landscape around Abergavenny.

He died in December 1970.

Exhibitions

An exhibition of his oil paintings was held at the Artworkhouse Abergavenny in November and December 2013.
